Michael Zavros creates paintings, photographs and sculptures that turn beauty, luxury and the self into both subject and method. Best known for his hyperreal paintings of designer fashion, immaculate interiors, trophy objects, fashion models and his own image, Zavros’ work mirrors the aesthetic language of luxury branding and high-end advertising.  His scenes operate as stages on which beauty becomes power and self-image becomes a trap.  Art history, fashion photography, myth and luxury lifestyle culture collapse into one another, elliciting images that are seductive, yet conceptually-charged.

But Zavros does not simply critique consumer culture from a safe distance and nor does he straightforwardly celebrate it.  Instead, he inhabits it.  And here lies the conundrum.  The luxury of Zavros’ images may seduce us, yet they also leave us feeling faintly complicit in this aestheticisation of wealth.  Whilst Zavros’ work luxuriates in status, surface and desirability, it also exposes how thoroughly these values organise contemporary life.  His work remains compelling precisely because it insists upon reflecting a culture that is enthralled by its own image even as we recognise the mechanisms behind our fascinations.
